The Phoenix Suns announced the appointment of Mike Budenholzer as their new head coach on Saturday morning. Although specific terms were not disclosed, The Athletic reported that Budenholzer signed a five-year contract for over $50 million.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, stating, “We’re excited to name Mike as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns and bring him back to his home state of Arizona. Mike has proven himself to be among the most successful head coaches in the NBA. He is the right leader to take us to the next level and reach our championship goals.”

Budenholzer’s hiring comes after Suns parted ways with Frank Vogel, following a disappointing first-round playoff exit from Minnesota Timberwolves. The 54-year-old coach, hailing from Holbrook, Ariz., previously led the Milwaukee Bucks to an NBA title before his departure in May 2023.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Budenholzer stated, “I am honored to be named head coach of the Phoenix Suns, the team I grew up watching. I would like to thank Mat Ishbia, (CEO) Josh Bartelstein and (general manager) James Jones for the opportunity to lead this team.”

With a coaching record that includes two NBA Coach of the Year awards and successful stints with the Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks, Budenholzer brings a wealth of experience to the Suns. General Manager James Jones expressed confidence in Budenholzer’s ability to lead the team to new heights, stating, “Mike’s exceptional basketball acumen, championship pedigree and his standing as one of the NBA’s premier coaches will be invaluable as we compete for a championship.”
