Harry Maguire’s decision to turn down a transfer to West Ham and stay at Manchester United is not a problem for the Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag. The former captain is a solid reserve in the Dutchman’s plans and the club hoped to make money from him, but the English international decided that he would fight for his place.
“It depends on Harry how much he will play during the season,” said Ten Hag. “I’ve been here for a year now and Maguire knows what I want from a central defender and what to expect from me. I know he can do it and I have said so many times. But it’s up to him to show it on the field. It’s about character and convincing me that he can do it when he gets his chance. I am happy that he is here with us because we need a strong squad. We have four centre-backs and with Luke Shaw it becomes five. We have 50-60 matches ahead of us, and all of them are national team players. That’s why it’s good that Maguire is here.”
The manager also confirmed that he is in talks with Jonny Evans to keep him at United for the rest of the season. The 35-year-old defender spent the summer training with the team and took part in some of the controls.
For Ten Haag, however, his team generally does not need any more new players this summer. “We are good in all positions, but we are still Manchester United and we will always strive to improve. When an opportunity arises in the market, we will act. But I also believe that with the available players we are ready to pursue our goals”, the manager is optimistic.
