Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournaments in Florida and California due to his prohibition to travel to the USA as a foreign citizen, who is yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The decision has raised concerns that the Serbian superstar may not be permitted to participate in the US Open, which takes place in late August.
A US Tenis Association spokesman expressed his hopefuleness that the Wolrd No.1 would be allowed to compete in the prestigious event.
“Policies concerning access to the United States are determined by the White House. We are very hopeful that the policy preventing Novak Djokovic from entering the United States will be rescinded, or lapse, in the near future,” the USTA’s Chris Widmaier commented.
“No COVID-19 restrictions are in place at the U.S. Open for any player, fan or other attendee. Novak, one of our sport’s great champions, would be welcome to compete at the 2023 U.S. Open.”
The 35-year old infamously missed out on the 2022 edition after refusing to get the vaccine. Miami Open and BNP Paribas Open were the other two big events that the big Serb missed.
