Edwin van der Sar’s condition has stabilized after the Dutchman suffered a brain heamorrhage on Friday.
The 52-year-old still remains in intensive care, but he is not in “life-threatening danger”.
“Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable,” his wife, Annemarrie van Kesteren, said in a statement issued by Ajax.
“Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative,” she added.
“We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop. He is not in life-threatening danger.”
Van der Sar was chief executive of Ajax up until May this year, when he resigned after the team finished 3rd and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
He was part of the board from 2012, shortly after his retirement from professional football in 2011, and took the role of chief executive in 2016.
