The 30-year-old was substituted at half-time and his injury status remained unknown at the time, before further tests show that he may be out for a long time.
Manager Erik Ten Hag said after the game, the change was a mere precaution, but it appears the situation is much more serious than first feared.
The 2018 World Cup winner has started all three of the club’s Premier League fixtures so far this season, netting the winner in a difficult 1-0 win over Wolves on the opening day.
The news is another blow for the Red Devils, who find themselves in a difficult spot with injuries to Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Tyler Malacia and now Varane before the crunch match against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.
