Despite starting strong and building a 3-0 advantage, Williams’ fitness seems to have let her go as she slipped in attempt to catch a volley and fell to the ground, holding her right knee.
Despite receiving medical treatment twice by a trainer, the 43-year-old just seemed unable to get back to full fitness and succumbed to a 1st round loss.
“I’m not sure what I’ve done. I’m going to have to investigate it tomorrow. It’s late today. But it was quite painful,” she said. “Grass is inherently going to be slippery; you’re going to fall at some point. It was just bad luck for me. I started the match perfectly. I was literally killing it. And then I got killed by the grass.”
Williams was the oldest player to participate in this year’s edition of Wimbledon and 4th overall in history. Former world No.1 Williams career has been plagued by injuries lately and she has dropped out of top 500. However, to the surprise of everyone, she was given a wild card entry and it certainly didn’t end the way the 43-year-old had envisaged it.
