The Dutch driver, who evened Ayrton Senna’s record of 8th straight poles, had looked out of sorts yesterday and failed to finish in the 1st place in any of the 3 practice sessions before the qualifications today, but his finish of 1:14.746s was enough to do it today.
But McLaren were very close, with Piastri and Norris both finishing within 1 enth of a second – Max’s lead ahead of Piastri was just 0.074s.
Max shared with the media after the qualification:
“It is a satisfying beginning of the season, but today’s achievement is also very special. It’s 30 years since he passed away at this track, and I’m honored to start from the 1st place here. And in a way, it’s a nice memory for Senna; he was a phenomenal pilot, as he also dominated in the qualifications.”
Verstappen added that it was a great qualification for him and for Red Bull.
