Max Verstappen clinched the pole position for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was the fastest in Q3, rounding a lap in 1.28.197, leaving his teammate Sergio Perez behind him for tomorrow’s start.
Last race winner – Carlos Sainz with Ferrari got only fourth place, trailing at almost half a second from the leader. Third on Sunday will start Lando Norris with McLaren, while the other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc will be 8th.
Home-favorite Yuki Tsunoda managed to get into Q3, but his pace was far off the top teams and stayed 10th for tomorrow’s race in front of his teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Verstappen’s pole is his fifth consecutive, equaling Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, who also had five wins in qualifications in a row.
