Russell Westbrook has joined forces with the 49ers Enterprises-led consortium in the quest of taking full charge of the English football team Leeds United.
The 34-year-old has become a minor stakeholder alongside golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
“I was lucky enough to have conversations with some of the partners in this deal, who already have ownership, the 49ers,” Westbrook said.
“So I was lucky enough to talk through that with friends, talking with my business partner as well about different things and having conversations, figuring out if this was the right deal and how we could make it different.”
Their stake grew from 15% to 44%, before agreeing a deal to buy the controlling stake of the Championship club. The full takeover is yet to be ratified by the English Football League.
Initially the deal was worth £400m, but it eventually went down to £170m after the club got relegated to the Championship.
