Carlos Alcaraz starts title defense against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal

The draw for Wimbledon 2024 set up some challenging encounters for both the women’s and men’s top seeds, promising an exciting start to the tournament.

The world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and last year’s champion Carlos Alcaraz will have different experiences as the men’s world No. 3 is going to play against a qualifier, while Swiatek is getting ready for a strong test against American Sofia Kenin.

Here is the whole picture after today’s draw:

Women’s Singles Draw:

  • Iga Swiatek, the world number one and top seed, faces a tough first-round test against American Sofia Kenin. Swiatek, known for her dominance on clay, will need to be at her best to overcome Kenin, a former Grand Slam champion.
  • Marketa Vondrousova, the reigning champion from the Czech Republic and sixth seed, is drawn against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Vondrousova will aim to defend her title starting with this potentially tricky match.

Men’s Singles Draw:

  • Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion and third seed, will begin his campaign against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal. Alcaraz is placed in the same half of the draw as top seed Jannik Sinner, who will play Yannick Hanfmann from Germany.
  • Andy Murray, the British two-time Wimbledon champion, will play Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic. Murray’s participation was uncertain due to recent surgery on a spinal cyst, but he remains in the draw, likely competing in his final Wimbledon before retiring after the Olympics.
  • Novak Djokovic, the seven-time Wimbledon winner and second seed, faces Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva in his opening match. Djokovic, who has been dealing with injury concerns, is seeded to meet Germany’s fourth seed Alex Zverev in the semi-final.
