FIFA are set to announce new project for the 2026 World Cup, which would see 48 teams compete against each other, spread throughout 12 groups as opposed to the traditional eight.
The initial plan consisted of 16 groups with 3 teams in one group, but the governing body seems to have thought better off it as they were fears that the games excitement would ebb away.
The revertion back to 4 teams means that a total of 104 games are set to be played in the tournament, which would take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
If this format is approved, then we are set of having the longest and largest World cup in history.
Football’s governing body will confirm the plans at a FIFA Council meeting on Tuesday in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, where chiefs have assembled for their annual congress on Thursday.
