Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva secured the most significant victory of her career by defeating second seed Aryna Sabalenka to advance to the semi-finals of the French Open. The match saw Sabalenka struggling with apparent discomfort, grimacing, and pointing to her stomach while consulting with medical staff during the first set.
Despite Sabalenka’s physical struggles, which made her consider retiring from the match, she managed to continue and compete. However, Andreeva, who is ranked 38th in the world, won with a scoreline of 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.
At 17 years old, Andreeva has become the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since Martina Hingis at the US Open in 1997. She is set to face Jasmine Paolini in the semi-finals after the Italian player stunned fourth seed Elena Rybakina earlier the same day.
Reflecting on her victory, Andreeva admitted to feeling nervous before the match but emphasized her focus and adaptability on the court: “Honestly I was really nervous before the match, I knew she’d have an advantage. Me and my coach, we had a plan today but again I didn’t remember anything. I just try to play as I feel.”
