AC Milan owner Ferry Cardinale has affirmed his commitment building a new stadium to elevate the club’s standing among the elite teams on the continent. Both AC Milan and local rivals Inter have explored options of moving away from the historic San Siro stadium, owned by the local authority, and envisage building their own individual arenas on the outskirts of the city.
Gerry Cardinale, the founder and managing partner of investment firm RedBird Capital, which acquired control of AC Milan in a 1.2 billion euro deal in 2022, outlined plans for a new 70,000-seater stadium capable of hosting music events. Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, Cardinale expressed his broader vision, stating, “I am going to create a company that is going to build this stadium, and then frankly I want to take that company and have it go build stadiums for all the other teams in Serie A.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who concluded his playing career with AC Milan in 2023 and currently serves as a senior advisor to the club owners, acknowledged the San Siro’s great memories but emphasized the significance of embracing new beginnings.
Despite these plans, Milan city authorities, last week, conveyed their interest in exploring potential collaboration with the clubs for a revitalization project at the San Siro. AC Milan, with seven European championships, is seeking to reclaim its status among football’s elite, with the most recent European triumph dating back to 2007, and a Serie A title secured in 2022.
