Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal defeated reigning Premier League champions Manchester City 4-3 after extra time in Orlando on Monday, securing a place in the Club World Cup quarterfinals against Brazil’s Fluminense.
City struck first in the ninth minute through Bernardo Silva, who tapped home after Renan Lodi’s clearance fell to his feet inside the six-yard box despite Al-Hilal’s protests over a possible handball by Rayan Ait-Nouri earlier in the build-up, the goal stood.

Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept his side in the match with a string of saves before halftime, and just moments into the second half, the Saudi champions leveled. Malcom’s run down the right found Joao Cancelo, and though Ederson blocked the initial cross, Marcos Leonardo was on hand to head in the rebound.

Malcom then gave Al-Hilal a shock lead, finishing calmly after being sent through by Cancelo. But City responded quickly, as Erling Haaland capitalized on a Silva corner to make it 2-2. A dramatic late clearance from Ali Lajami denied Haaland a winner in regulation.

In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly nodded in a corner to give Al-Hilal a 3-2 lead, only for Phil Foden to equalize minutes later with a superb volley set up by Rayan Cherki. The final twist came in the 112th minute, when Leonardo netted his second of the night after Ederson parried a header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, sealing one of the most memorable wins in Al-Hilal’s history.
