Carlos outlasted Fabio after 5 sets at the Grand Slam in London.

Two-time defending champ Carlos Alcaraz had to play almost 5 hours to qualify for the 2nd round at Wimbledon vs. a much older and much less accomplished Fabio Fognini at Centre Court after defeating him a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 at the opening round of the Grand Slam on grass in the UK capital.

The number 2 seed at the tournament, Carlos, had a lot more problems than expected, as in the end the Spaniard extended his current winning streak to a career-best 19 games.

The Spaniard is 22 and has already won 5 Grand Slams, including Roland-Garros 3 weeks ago in the French capital.

Fognini, who is 38 years old and played for the last time in his career at Wimbledon, has never reached beyond the 3rd round at the Grand Slam on grass in London in 15 appearances, making his opponent’s task very difficult. The Italian entered Wimbledon ranked 138th in the world and with a 0-6 record in the current year.

But in the end, Fabio felt only 1 set short of eliminating the defending champion in the 1st round, as that happened only twice in the history of Wimbledon – Lleyton Hewitt in 2003 and Manuel Santana in 1967.
