Gareth Southgate has announced his 25-man squad for European qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling are the more notable absentees.
The Liverpool defender has suffered a dip in form and rumours had been circulating that he might miss on an International call. Southgate believes that his dismissal isn’t something negative, but a chance for Alexander-Arnold to re-energize.
“This is a time in the season when you don’t want to carry too many if they’re not going to play because they can have a break and re-energise,” head-coach Southgate said.
As for Sterling, Southgate admits that he would have called him if it weren’t for his fitness issues.
Kyle Walker makes the team, despite ongoing police investigation. Ivan Toney has received his first ever call for International duty after an impressive campaign with Brentford.
“Ivan has been consistent across the season. He is playing really well. I like his presence in games and he deserves his opportunity.” Southgate commented.
