Fernando Alonso claims that 2023 can still be considered a great season for him, despite recent drop in form, which has seen him fail to score points in the last two events.
Mexico was another difficult race with the Spaniard qualifying 13th and failing to impress in race trim as he was forced to let his teammate through before retiring.
“Not only in the race, I think the whole weekend has been a little bit difficult for us. Sometimes you learn more things from the difficulties than from the celebrations, so hopefully it’s one of those times.” Alonso commented afterwards.
The 42-year-old had an amazing start of the season, bagging 6 podiums in the first eight races, but since then it has been a downhill struggle with lots of issues and only one podium in Zandvoort. As a result, Aston Martin have fallen behind not only to Mercedes and Ferrari, but to McLaren as well.
“Obviously, we would love to keep fighting for podiums, but we are not in that position unfortunately.” the two-time world champion added.
“But no, it’s not frustration yet, this year has been an incredible season for us. So, even if we DNF the remaining races, 2023 is still a good season, but hopefully we can revert this situation and we can finish on a high.”
