Andy Murray’s team announced on Friday that the British tennis star will be absent from both the Monte Carlo Masters and Munich Open next month as he recuperates from a severe ankle injury sustained during his recent exit from the Miami Open. The 36-year-old rolled his ankle during the deciding set of his match against Czech player Tomas Machac in southern Florida last Sunday, resulting in a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5) defeat and a diagnosis of ruptured ligaments, necessitating an “extended period” on the sidelines.
“After consultation with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has made the decision to forgo participation in the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open Munich,” stated his team in a released statement. The duration of Murray’s absence from the court remains uncertain as he continues to explore treatment options with his medical team. Murray expressed disappointment at the setback but reiterated his eagerness to return to competitive play as soon as feasible.
The former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion, who underwent hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, previously indicated that he did not plan to extend his career significantly beyond the summer but aimed to participate in another Olympics. He also expressed hopes of competing in the French Open, commencing at Roland Garros on May 26. Wimbledon, where Murray has twice claimed victory, is set to begin on July 1, followed by the Paris Games later in the month. The Monte Carlo Masters is scheduled for April 7-14, with the Munich Open following from April 15-21.
