Onana joined Everton from Lille for £33 million in 2022, making 72 appearances and scoring four goals. He had been linked with Arsenal in 2023 and attracted interest from several top clubs this summer.
Villa manager Unai Emery targeted a new defensive midfielder after selling Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35 million in June. Villa, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season, are strengthening their squad for their first Champions League campaign since the 1982-83 season, the year after they won the European Cup.
Onana’s signing brings Villa’s summer spending to approximately £140 million. Other signings include:
- Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for £35 million
- Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus for £18.6 million
- Jaden Philogene’s return from Hull for £18 million
- Ross Barkley from Luton for £5 million
- Lewis Dobbin from Everton for £9 million
Aston Villa will kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham on Saturday, August 17.
