Australia’s hero was Storm Sanders, who won the first singles rubber before returning for the deciding doubles match alongside 38-year-old veteran Samantha Stosur. Britain reached the semi-finals for the first time in 41 years
With the tie level at 1-1 following the singles rubbers, Sanders and Stosur defeated Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 10-6 to secure their country’s first final appearance since 2019.
“That could have gone either way, credit to the British girls… It’s a real honour to represent Australia in the final,” Sanders said.
Australia will play either Switzerland or the Czech Republic in the final on Sunday.
