Austria’s victory was well-deserved as they displayed spirit and desire throughout the match. They showed great determination, particularly in responding to a strong start by the Netherlands in the second half. Marcel Sabitzer’s late strike ultimately secured the win for Austria.
Austria took an early lead in the sixth minute when Donyell Malen turned Alexander Prass’s dangerous cross into his own net. Malen had a chance to redeem himself but missed his shot, allowing Austria to maintain control as the Netherlands struggled to maintain possession.
Austria had further opportunities to extend their lead through Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic. However, the Dutch equalized just 75 seconds into the second half when Cody Gakpo curled in a fine finish, which changed the tempo of the game.
The Netherlands continued to push, and Virgil van Dijk’s header deflected over the bar. Despite this pressure, Austria managed to retake the lead with Romano Schmid’s powerful header, which deflected off Stefan de Vrij and into the net.
Memphis Depay nearly secured a draw for the Dutch with a close-range volley, but Sabitzer sealed Austria’s victory by breaking through and firing into the roof of the net, sending Austrian fans into jubilation.
Nobody saw that coming! 🤯
