The Netherlands suffered a huge blow before the beginning of the Euro 2024 on Friday after Frenkie de Jong was ruled out of the championship.
Frenkie (27) hasn’t played since sustaining a right ankle injury in his team’s 3-2 loss against Real Madrid at the end of April.
Despite that, the Dutch star was part of Ronald Koeman’s 26-player team for the European championship in Germany with optimism that he would be healthy enough to play at the forum.
However, his country announced that the time was not enough for the midfielder to be able to play.
“It is very sad and disappointing for me that I won’t be able to help my country at the Euros,” De Jong shared after the news of his absence.
“I’ve done everything that depends on me in the past several weeks, but my ankle needs more time, and that means that I will miss the Euro in Germany.”
He missed Barcelona’s final 6 matches of the campaign after suffering his 3rd ankle injury of the season in the Clásico vs. Los Blancos.
