The Bavarians loss means they have to play catch up to Borussia in the title race after the International break

Bayern Munich were defeated 2-1 by a strong Bayer Leverkusen side away from home on Sunday night.

It all looked smooth sailing for Julian Nagelsman’s men when Joshua Kimmich broke the deadlock in the 22th minutes and gave the visiting side the lead, despite Leverkusen having the edge in the opening stages.

In the second half the Munich’s defence was sloppy and sluggish as they conceded two penalties, both rewarded with the Interference of VAR.

Exequiel Palacios stepped up for both and the Argentinian showed nerves of steel as he slotted two past Yann Sommer’s goal to put his team in front.

Despite late surge from Bayern, who missed good chances through Kingsley Coman and Matthijs de Ligt, Leverkusen held on and secured an unlikely victory.

With this defeat, Bayern, who fight on three fronts, surrender the lead to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Bayer Leverkusen climbed up to eight.
