The 31-year old had been a part of the Sporting Kansas City team for the 2022 campaign, when he made 25 appearances, 22 of which had been a regular start. He managed to bag 3 assists over that period before being put aside by the Western Conference team in early April.
“Ben Sweat is an experienced defender in our league, and his arrival adds depth and versatility to our roster,” New England head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena said in a release.
Sweat has made 121 appearances in the MLS overall in his 8 years of experience with many different clubs – New York City FC, Inter Miami CF, Austin FC and Sporting Kansas KC. His most glamourous spell was undoubtedly with NYFC in 2017-219, where nestled one goal and nine assists, being a regular starter at the left-back position.
New England will face Sweat’s former club in the next round in their quest of continuing their fine run of form, which has currently seen them top of the Eastern Conference with 17 points out of possible 24.
