A turbulent first half saw the yellow team more or less seal the victory as goals flooded the visitors net.
Donyell Malen broke the deadlock as early as the 5th minute before Jude Bellingham doubled the lead in the 18th from the penalty spot.
Two minutes up the host were 3-0 up with Sebastian Haller, who put a brace past Jan Jakob Olschowsky just beyond the half an hour mark.
From then onwards the title challengers were in cruise control and were just finishing off the match.
Late strikes from Ramy Bensebaini (a penalty kick) and Lars Stindl reduced Monchegladbach deficit to 2 goals before Giovanni Reyna rounded off the final 5-2 in stoppage time.
With this win Dortmund keep the pressure on Bayern and despite the Bavarians being the favorites, the title race in Germany promises to be a nail-biter with just two games to spare.
