Bruno Fernandes will continue to wear the captain’s armband, despite his antics in the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, says manager Erik Ten Hag.
Fernandes came under fierce criticism after his petulant behaviour, which included feigning injury (holding his face, while being hit at the chest), pushing a linesman and refusing to track back when Stefan Bajcetic went past him towards the closing stages of the match.
That has led to rumours that head coach Ten Hag may consider stripping United’s attacking midfielder of the captaincy, which Fernandes has obtained ever since Harry Maguire was dropped out of the first team.
The Dutch manager, however, was adamant that no such measure will be taken as he expressed his full support for his Portuguese superstar.
“He’s playing a brilliant season. He’s had a really important role in why we’re in the position we are.” said Ten Hag
“He’s giving energy to the team, not only running a lot at the highest intensity but in the right way and right direction. He’s coaching players, he’s an inspiration.”
“But no-one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes. We have to learn and he has to learn. He will because he’s intelligent. I’m happy to have Bruno Fernandes in the team and he will be captain when Harry isn’t on the pitch.”
Manchester United face Real Betis for Europa League last 16 tie on Thursday night in an attempt to get back to the winning ways and put Anfield’s misery behind them.
