Carlos Alcaraz says Novak Djokovic deserves to finish the year as No. 1. The Serbian had a stellar year, winning three out of the four Grand Slams and losing the final of the fourth at Wimbledon against Alcaraz.
Djokovic also added two Masters titles from Cincinnati and Paris.
The Spaniard spoke after his 7:6 (3), 3:6, 4:6 loss to Alexander Zverev at the final ATP tournament in Torino. Alcaraz added that he had a chance for the top spot in the world rankings, but he didn’t take advantage of it.
“He deserves it, of course. He’s won three of the four Grand Slams and reached the final of the other one. He’s won two or three Masters 1000s. He deserves it. He’s only lost five matches all year, it’s amazing. And I heard it wasn’t his best year after all. Outstanding. I had my chances to be No.1 but I didn’t take advantage. All I can say is he deserves it and he will chase himself next year,” Alcaraz said.
