The Spaniard could be brought back to the Scuderia after they replaced him with Lewis Hamilton

Ferrari have stayed out of the driver market this season, but questions are already circling Maranello about what comes next with Lewis Hamilton’s contract expiring at the end of 2026, the Scuderia will soon need to look at their options for one of the most wanted seats in Formula 1.

Charles Leclerc is tied down long-term, though his deal includes an exit clause. Hamilton, meanwhile, holds an option for 2027, but sources suggest he is unlikely to trigger it unless he feels the team’s commitment to him remains strong.

So far, the partnership hasn’t delivered the expected results as the seven-time world champion is yet to stand on the podium this season and has only outperformed Leclerc in six competitive sessions. Unless his form improves, it is hard to imagine the relationship extending beyond the end of 2026.

Former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz believes the door to Maranello isn’t closed to him. Speaking to DAZN, the Spaniard admitted part of him wanted to “tear Ferrari apart” after losing his seat to Hamilton, but his professionalism and focus never faltered. “I’m grateful to have the doors open at Ferrari; that was my intention, and I’m glad it’s that way,” he said.
