Charles (39) had risen to become 1 of the NBA’s most accomplished assistant coaches and now will have the opportunity to lead a team in the league and try to successfully rebuild with Charlotte.
New chief of basketball operations Jeff Peterson in Hornets played together with Lee in Hawks and now the 2 will work together again.
Charles will finish Boston’s postseason run before moving over to join Charlotte.
Before landing the job with the Celtics under Joe Mazzulla in the past summer, Charles spent 5 seasons under 2-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer with Milwaukee and was part of the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship run.
Charles will take the place of Steve Clifford, who stepped down at the end of the campaign but will stay in Hornets in a front office position.
