The club says it is working in full transparency with FA during the investigation

The Football Association has charged Chelsea with 74 rule breaches related to payments to agents and third-party investments for more than a decade.

The alleged offences mainly cover the period between the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons, when the club was under the ownership of Roman Abramovich. The FA confirmed that Chelsea have until 19 September to formally respond.

The case is following transactions involving agents and intermediaries, with concerns that financial reporting during that era was incomplete or inaccurate. Abramovich sold the club in 2022 to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who say they were made aware of the issues during the takeover process and were the ones to show this matter to the FA.

In a statement, Chelsea stressed that the current owners acted with transparency: “During a thorough due diligence process prior to completion of the purchase, the ownership group became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions and other potential breaches of FA rules.

“Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including the FA. The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the club’s files and historical data.”

The FA’s charges follow similar concerns raised by UEFA and the Premier League last year. Chelsea, who were fined £8.6 million by UEFA in July 2023 for breaches of Financial Fair Play, could face further sanctions depending on the outcome of this investigation.
