“Robert is a good guy and a really good player, but being a coach sometimes means making difficult and painful decisions for the team,” Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi said.
“I wish him good luck for the future.”
The 25-year-old will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No.1 goalkeeping post after Edouard Mendy departed the club for Saudi Arabia’s side Al-Ahli.
The Spaniard made 23 league appearances for Brighton last campaign before losing his position as the No.1 goalkeeper to Jason Steele.
Sanchez is Chelsea’s fifth signing this transfer window as they begin major team restructure under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.
