Mervis' double inspired a 7th inning rally, which led to victory

The Chicago Cubs demolished Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Friday night.

Rookie Matt Mervis proved to be the star man as the 25-year old had RBI double, which inspired a 7th inning rally from the Cubs as they emerged victorious in an emphatic fashion.

Yan Gomes had the go-ahead single in the seventh, Christopher Morel hit on a two-run homer in the ninth and Drew Smyly pitched six strong innings.

It was a sloppy start for Chicago as they allowed Minnesota’s Sonny Gray nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings with four hits and one successful run.

But the tide soon shifted as Griffin Jax stumbled in the 7th inning and lost the lead on four consecutive one-out hits.

“The guy is nasty. He may not be feeling like that right now, but he’s going to be a guy that we’re going to continue to turn to,” manager Rocco Baldelli said of Jax.
