The Australian broke his hand on several place in an unpleasant incident at Zandvoort back in August and has been sidelined ever since.
The 34-year-old has undergone surgery and Alpha Tauri are keen not to rush with his return, which may worsen the damage in his hand.
His replacement Liam Lawson has put in a stunning performances in his absence, outperforming teammate Yuki Tsunoda and famously outqualifying double world champion Max Verstappen at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Despite all of that, Lawson has not received a full-time contract for next year as Alpha Tauri have opted with Tsunoda and Ricciardo for 2024.
“Hearing it’ll be one more weekend of Liam Lawson at AlphaTauri in Qatar,” Chris Medland of F1 outlet Racer reported.
“Sim session went well for Daniel Ricciardo but not yet at 100% and trying FP1 and finding it’s a bit too soon would have really hurt Lawson on a Sprint weekend.”
