Former Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese has declined his induction into the team’s Hall of Fame.
Freese played a pivotal role in his hometown club path to their memorable success in 2011, when they lifted the World Series.
As a result he was the one, who gathered the most votes by the fans for this year’s class, but in an online statement he declined the honor.
“This is something that I have given an extreme amount of thought to, humbly, even before the voting process began. I am aware of the impact I had helping the team bring great memories to the city I grew up in, including the 11th championship, but this honor means more to me,” he said.

That leaves Jose Oquendo and Max Lanier to be selected and honored with a special ceremony on August 20.
Freese was the MVP of the 2011 World Series and NL Championship Series. He batted .397 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in 18 postseason games that year.
