The New Jersey Devils have secured a valuable player for their future, signing young defenseman Luke Hughes to a seven-year, $63 million contract. General manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the deal, which carries an annual cap hit of $9 million through the 2031-32 season — one million more than his brother, star center Jack Hughes.

The 22-year-old was one of the final restricted free agents left unsigned a week before opening night. Anaheim recently finalized a deal with Mason McTavish, while Nashville’s Luke Evangelista remains without a contract.
Through his first 155 regular-season games, Hughes has recorded 93 points, establishing himself as a mobile, two-way presence on defense. He also logged two points in four playoff appearances, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game.
His brother Jack believes Luke’s role will only expand this season, especially with opportunities on the power play. “That’s so important for him because he’s got so much upside,” Jack said. “He’s a great skater. He’s a really good defender, too. I think he can be a true No. 1 for us.”
