The world No. 1 got his 48th Grand Slam semi-final of his career

In a compelling battle on a sweltering Tuesday at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic extended his mastery over Taylor Fritz, securing a hard-fought 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory and advancing to a record 48th Grand Slam semi-final.

Despite Djokovic’s previous dominance over Fritz, having won all eight of their prior encounters, including a challenging five-set match at Melbourne Park in 2021 and a commanding victory at the US Open last year, the defending champion faced a significant test this time.

In a grueling first game that witnessed nine deuces, Djokovic struggled to break Fritz, who valiantly saved eight break points. The American matched Djokovic’s intensity in the energy-sapping conditions, creating two set points. However, Djokovic displayed resilience, saving both set points and ultimately securing the first set in a tiebreak, elevating his game when it mattered most.

After Fritz broke early in the second set, Djokovic, seeking his 11th title and 25th major to surpass Margaret Court’s record, faced a formidable challenge. Despite the Serb’s attempts to respond, Fritz held firm, claiming the set to even the score at one set apiece.

Cooling off with ice packs on his head, Djokovic found his rhythm in the third set, breaking Fritz on his 16th attempt and seizing a 2-0 lead. This breakthrough provided the platform for Djokovic to control the set and move one step closer to victory.

In the fourth set, Fritz struggled with his movement, allowing Djokovic to capitalize and secure a crucial break in the sixth game. Although Fritz attempted a comeback, Djokovic held firm, ultimately prevailing in the match. The victory marked Djokovic’s continued pursuit of an 11th Australian Open title and a 25th Grand Slam title to surpass Margaret Court’s illustrious record.
