Peter Ridsdale, the president of Preston North End and a board member of the English Football League (EFL), has issued a stern warning, stating that English football could be fatally jeopardized if lower division clubs and leagues are not kept “competitive and stable.”
Ridsdale expressed frustration over the prioritization of discussions on new financial rules for the Premier League, potentially impacting the EFL’s expected share of about £900 million in television rights money.
The EFL president emphasized the need to maintain competition and stability, emphasizing the vast financial disparities between the Premier League and the Championship. He highlighted the challenges faced by relegated teams, receiving significantly lower payments compared to the top-flight clubs, and stressed the importance of preserving competitiveness and stability for the overall health of English football.
The ongoing pressure from the government and the looming independent regulator adds urgency to finding a resolution, with the football governance bill set for a close vote.
