On Monday night, Joel Embiid made NBA history by scoring a franchise-record 70 points, marking the highest individual score of the season. This outstanding performance led the Philadelphia 76ers to a 133-123 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
In addition to his scoring feat, Embiid achieved a career-high 18 rebounds. He demonstrated remarkable accuracy, going 24 of 41 from the field, including 1 of 2 from beyond the arc, and made an impressive 21 of 23 free throws. With a layup at 1:41 remaining in the game, he surpassed Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers record of 68 points, which had stood since December 16, 1967. It’s worth noting that Chamberlain set the NBA record with 100 points while playing for the Philadelphia Warriors.
Embiid, a six-time All-Star and the reigning MVP, has now scored at least 30 points in an impressive 21 consecutive games, contributing to the 76ers’ current six-game winning streak.
In the first matchup between the 7-footers, rookie Victor Wembanyama showcased his skills with 33 points and seven rebounds in just 29 minutes. Despite his standout performance, the rebuilding San Antonio Spurs struggled on the road, falling to a 5-19 record.
