England secured the top spot in Group C at Euro 2024 after a goalless draw with Slovenia, a match that did little to alleviate the ongoing negativity and questions surrounding Gareth Southgate’s squad.
Bukayo Saka had a goal disallowed in the first half due to Phil Foden being offside before delivering the cross. England struggled to create opportunities, with their first shot on target coming as late as the 30th minute. The introduction of Kobbie Mainoo at halftime in place of Conor Gallagher added some pace to England’s play, but the team continued to lack the urgency and creativity needed to break down Slovenia’s disciplined defense.
Slovenia, aware that a draw would secure their progression to the knockout stages, focused on defending and made it difficult for England to find a breakthrough.
As the match drew to a close, Slovenia’s defensive efforts intensified, aiming to hold on for the valuable point rather than pushing for a historic first win at a European Championship. England’s best chance came in added time when substitute Cole Palmer’s shot was saved by the Slovenian goalkeeper.

Despite the poor performance, England’s group stage results mean they avoid facing Germany, Spain, Portugal, and France until the final and it looks like Netherlands will be their next opponent in the Round of 16.
