This marked the second consecutive match for England that went into extra time. Declan Rice nearly gave England the lead five minutes into the additional 30 minutes, but his long-range effort was expertly saved by Switzerland’s goalkeeper, Yann Sommer.
In a bold move, England manager Gareth Southgate substituted captain Harry Kane, the team’s all-time leading scorer and primary penalty taker, for Ivan Toney during the second half of extra time.
Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri attempted to surprise England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a direct shot from a corner kick at the 110-minute mark, but the ball rebounded off the post.
5/5 – England scored all five of their penalties against Switzerland, just the second time in 10 major tournament shootouts that England have scored 100% of their penalties, also doing so at EURO 96 vs Spain (4/4). Nerve. pic.twitter.com/vAkDL5U7NZ

In the penalty shootout, England were flawless, converting all five of their spot-kicks. Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji was the only player to miss, with Pickford correctly guessing the direction of his shot, ensuring England’s victory and their place in the semi-finals.
