First start of the year is this weekend in Bahrain and gloves are off

New Formula 1 season begins this weekend with the first race in Bahrain at the Sakhir circuit. Although there are almost no changes to the rules this year, the shake-up in the drivers line-up will be the main focus point this season.

Only three teams kept the same two drivers from last year – Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes. Accidently or not, these are the top three teams in the Constructors’ Championship from 2022.

In Bahrain three drivers will make their debut starts as first-team pilots. Oscar Piastri will be one of them, after going through some heavy drama in the middle of last season when he was announced new Alpine driver before he denied having signed contract with the French team and joining McLaren instead.

Alpine substituted Piastri with Pierre Gasly, who on the other hand, will be replaced by another debutant in Aplha Tauri – Nick De Vries. The Dutch driver will race alongside Yuki Tsunoda, forming one of the youngest duos on the grid.

Logan Sargeant is the last debutant, who takes the place of Nicholas Latifi at Williams. Sargeant will be the only US driver on the grid and first since 2015. Together with Alexander Albon they will try to pull the team out of the crux from last seasons.

Having won two World Championships in a row, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen looks like the clear favorite to get his hands on the trophy once again, but Ferrari and Mercedes can never be counted out. The Italian team developed a “more reliable” car, as they say, which can be huge boost, because of the many technical difficulties they had stumbled on in 2022. Their golden boy – Charles Leclerc was in the battle for the Championship for the first time last season, but lost his chances before the summer break. This time he will be eager to show what he can really do and if the car is capable to put up a fight against Red Bull and Mercedes, it will be very interesting.

Mercedes also look forward to be back among the best on the grid after turbulent 2022 as Lewis Hamilton still dreams of greatness. He will be fighting for his eighth World Championship, putting him at the very top in history of the sport over Michael Schumacher.

The three-day pre-season tests in Bahrain showed that neither team has everything sorted out and their search for balance is still ongoing. Ferrari may be the fastest on the straights, but the medium and fast corners can be a problem once again for them.

Engines and tires are warming up, drivers are eager to press the gas.
