Fred Vasseur wanted to bring a podium for the tifosi at Monza on Sunday, but the Scuderia finish 4th and 6th

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur was very disappointed after the Scuderia failed to deliver a podium finish in front of their home fans at Monza. With Charles Leclerc finishing fourth and Lewis Hamilton sixth, the home crowd were left without the fairytale result they had hoped for.

“I think today it’s a shame and I’m disappointed to not be able to bring a podium to the Tifosi,” Vasseur said. “When you see the fans on the start and finish line and the podium, it would have been magic, and they deserve it.”

Leclerc battled hard with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri but ultimately finished four seconds adrift of the Australian and a full 25 seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen. Hamilton’s strategic gamble also failed to pay off, leaving him a distant sixth.

Vasseur was quick to acknowledge Verstappen’s dominance: “From the first lap to the last lap, he was there, he was flying and he was much faster than us. But overall, compared to Mercedes and McLaren, we did our job. It’s not enough, but we did our job.”

Still, the Ferrari boss sought encouragement from the weekend. “We are close to McLaren today. It’s probably the smallest gap of the season. Even in practice, qualifying and the race, we were much closer. It’s not enough because they are still ahead of us, but at least we closed the gap.”
