Mikael Backlund netted his third in as many games and 13th of the season with 3:19 left in Flames’ third power-play tally of the night.

The Flames outshot the Coyotes 52-14 and Arizona goalie Karel Vejmelka made 45 saves. Calgary dominated play surrendering a season-low 14 shots.

Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller and Matias Maccelli scored goals for the Coyotes, who saw their nine-game points streak (5-0-4) come to an end.

It had been the longest such streak running in the NHL and only six have been longer in the NHL this season.

Calgary’s Chris Tanev, who broke in with Vancouver in 2011, played in his 700th NHL game. He ranks fourth among undrafted players in career games with Toronto Maple Leafs’s Mark Giordano (1,081) leading that list.

The Flames visit the Western Conference leaders Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night while the Coyotes host the Nashville Predators on Sunday.
