Frances Tiafoe has set up an eagerly anticipated all-American semi-final showdown against Taylor Fritz at the US Open, promising an epic battle between two childhood friends with contrasting personalities but shared ambitions. Both players are looking to end a long Grand Slam drought for American men.
Tiafoe advanced to the first all-American Grand Slam semi-final since 2005 after Grigor Dimitrov retired due to injury, trailing 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-1. Earlier in the day, Fritz secured his spot by defeating Alexander Zverev 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

The winner of Friday’s semi-final will have the chance to become the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick, who last made it to a major final at Wimbledon in 2009 and was the last US player to win a men’s Grand Slam title in New York in 2003.
Tiafoe, who made it to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in 2022, noted the contrast between his and Fritz’s personalities ahead of their clash. “We’re on opposite ends of the spectrum,” said Tiafoe, the 20th seed. Despite having won only one of his seven encounters with Fritz, Tiafoe hopes the support of the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium will give him the edge.
