Garbine Muguruza has announced that she is not planning to participate in the WTA Tour events until at least July or August.
The former world No.1 and 2017 Wimbeldon champion becomes the latest high-profile figure to take extensive break from the sport, following Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka, who both withdrew from the weekly demands of the circuit, underlining just how much stress there is at stake.
The 29-year old Muguruza didn’t give specific details as to why she is taking a break, but her form has dropped drastically ever since the Australian Open final loss in 2020.
She lost all of her four games this year with the last one being played in late February.
In a social media post she said:
“Spending time with family and friends and it’s really been healthy and amazing so I am going to lengthen this period till summer. Therefore I am going to miss the clay and grass court season. Thanks for all the lovely messages and will be updating you guys.”
