After the finish of the race, the Mercedes driver and the Ferrari driver cars were inspected by FIA and according to Article 3.5.9. The punishment was announced for illegal wear of the plank in the car.
The penalty cost the British driver a hard-fought 2nd place, in which he was close to Max Verstappen, who triumphed in the deciding laps of the race.
The disqualification announcement came 4 hours after the end of the U.S. GP.
Of the 4 cars picked for routine checks, Verstappen, Lando Norris, Hamilton, and Leclerc, 2 were disqualified. With the disqualification of the British driver, Lando Norris secured 2nd place in the race after his car was clear after the plan wear checks.
