Lewis Hamilton has expressed his intention to continue racing in Formula 1 well into his 40s, following in the footsteps of his old rival Fernando Alonso.
Alonso recently signed a new deal with Aston Martin, committing to F1 until at least 2026, extending his career past his 45th birthday. Hamilton, who will turn 40 next year, is embarking on a new chapter with Ferrari, in a commitment spanning at least two years.
Acknowledging Alonso’s enduring presence in the sport, Hamilton remarked, “I am not the oldest driver here. I am going to be racing for quite some time still so it is good [Alonso] is still around.”
Reflecting on Alonso’s remarkable career, Hamilton praised him as one of the best drivers in F1 history and highlighted the significance of his continued presence in the sport. He remarked, “Fernando is one of the best drivers we’ve had in the sport so for him to continue to be here and continue to have the output he’s had just shows what is possible. And shows the new era of athlete, what the human body can do and continue to do if you nurture it.”
Ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Hamilton expressed his surprise at finding himself considering racing into his 40s, a prospect he previously dismissed. However, he emphasized feeling youthful and energetic, stating, “I never thought I would be racing into my 40s. I’m pretty sure I said I wouldn’t. But life is such a crazy trip. I don’t feel 40. I generally feel great.”
