The Turks won 2-1 after two goals from Merih Demiral that came from corner kicks

Turkey won their right to stay in Euro 2024 campaign with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Austria, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.

Both of Turkey’s goals came from corner kicks delivered by Arda Guler and were finished by centre-back Merih Demiral. Demiral’s first goal came just 57 seconds into the match, setting the tone early with the fastest goal ever in European Championship’s knock-out stage.

After the break he extended Turkey’s lead just before the hour mark after another great cross from Guler.

Austria responded by pinning Turkey back and eventually got back into the match in the 66th minute, also from a corner, with substitute Michael Gregoritsch capitalizing on a loose ball at the back post.

As the Turkish players began to tire, goalkeeper Mert Gunok made a crucial save in the final minute of added time, turning Christoph Baumgartner’s towering header around the post, preserving Turkey’s lead and securing the win.

This victory sets up a quarter-final clash for Turkey against the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday, completing the lineup for the last eight of Euro 2024.
