Rune beat his opponent for fewer than 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Holger Rune, world number 9, started with a prestigious victory in straight sets against Dominic Thiem in Monte Carlo.

Rune won for 33 minutes in the 1st set 6-2 after 2 breaks from 4 chances as Dominic didn’t have a single chance to break his opponent’s serve.

The 2nd set was much more competitive as Holger won it with only 1 break. The crucial break was when the Austrian served in the 7th game but allowed Rune to have 5 breakpoints, and the Danish tennis player converted the 5th chance to lead 4-3.

That was the 1st match between Rune and Thiem on the ATP tour. Rune will face in the 3rd round the winner from Cerundolo and Berrettini.
