Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga is in stable condition in the hospital after a severe mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during Sunday night’s Euro 2024 match. Varga sustained a fractured cheekbone from the clash and is scheduled for surgery, as confirmed by Hungary manager Marco Rossi.
“Varga is okay,” Rossi told BBC Sport. “Unfortunately, he will be operated on because he suffered a fracture. We will see [what happens]. If we progress in the tournament for sure he will not be with us.”
During his post-match news conference, Rossi reassured that Varga was “healthy” and “not under any kind of risks.” The game was paused for nearly seven minutes while Varga received extensive treatment on the pitch. He was then transported to a hospital in Stuttgart for further care.

The Hungarian Football Federation provided updates on Varga’s condition via a post on X , stating that they would continue to inform the public about any changes in his status. The incident was alarming, with sheets held around Varga as medical personnel attended to him, and his teammates immediately signaled for urgent medical assistance.
“What I heard from the players is that he looked like he was not conscious so everybody was really worried about his condition and also worried about the fact the doctors arrived a bit late, but probably they didn’t realize it was a dangerous situation,” Rossi added.
